SSGT Christopher Whittemore, Retired

Chris is a 16-year Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.  He served with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Ramadi in 05-06 and 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines in Fallujah in 2007 before doing a lateral move to the air wing where he served with HMLA-369 in Helmand Province in Afghanistan in 2010.

Upon returning, Chris was eventually assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion due to chronic combat PTSD and other physical ailments including residual symptoms from multiple mild traumatic brain injuries.  Chris would go on to be medically retired in 2015.

Chris' Story

Take a journey through the eyes of a Marine Scout Sniper as he unveils the horrors of war through the mean stress of Ramadi, Iraq, in 2005.  From losing fellow Marines, escaping death's grasp, and moving silently through the unforgiving streets, dodging IEDs, enemy snipers, and the chaos associated with the country's first election.  Continue the journey through Fallujah, Iraq, in 2007, where the fighting turns more inwards, and the struggles faced when balancing the losses in war and at home.  Finish the ride as you fly as a UH-1 Crew Chief/Door Gunner through Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Fly through countless hours of combat missions in support of multiple countries militaries and the scars associate with flying the wounded and fallen back to base.

Then, take the final journey by facing down the reality of the hardships that service men and women face with coping with the horrors of war, the fight against the stigma of being broken, and finding a way to transition back into the civilian world.  This is the story of that one Marine and his family went through after each deployment, finding a way to stay strong through the darkest of times, and triumphing from the darkness and finding success against all odds.
